And the boos that greeted Djed Spence at the John Smith's Stadium as he turned out for England Under-21s on Monday evening fell firmly into the latter Camp

For the uninitiated, the source of the boos were borne out of nothing more than the right-back having played for Nottingham Forest last season - the side who beat Huddersfield Town in the play-off final just a few weeks ago, having benefited from a couple of dubious vAR decisions.

If those boos had been meant seriously in any way, we would, if anything, join England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley in his condemnation.

Regular readers will know my feelings on the anger problem that is endemic in football, the unacceptable abuse that both players and officials face, and the idiocy of fans who go to games seemingly determined to wind people up rather than have a nice time.

But these boos? These boos had all the puny, playful force behind them that would have greeted Wolf from Gladiators at an appearance at a shopping centre in the mid-1990s.

It was light pantomime, not the reaction Emmanuel Adebayor got after running the length of the pitch to goad Arsenal fans having scored against them for Manchester City.

What happened was this: the teamsheets were being read out in numerical order for the penultimate time before kick-off against Slovenia .
