PUBLIC
ADMINISTRATION
advisor to his Council and the normal
means of communication between the
Council, government departments and
other bodles
on
matters of general im-
portance.
By
virtue of
his
many con-
tacts with the leading personalities
on
the Council he is able to exercise a
general influence. Few people here
would wish to change this system for
the
City
Manager system. And
if
there
are those who, in the case of the smaller
authorities, would readily increase the
powers and status of the Town Clerk to
bring him more nearly into the
position
of a
city
manager
it
is unlikely that they
would accept the prevailing notion thaE
only those whose initial training was as
a solicitor were fit for such a position.
Local
Statistics
We have received from the
County
Treasurer of Derbyshire an extremely
well-produced booklet giving statistics
and data about the administrative
county.
A
good deal of
this
information
is not available in any other publication.
Moreover great use
is
made of coloured
diagrams to make the information more
readily understandable. Here is a pub-
lication useful to the citizen and to the
student.
It
costs 2s.
and
can
be obtained
from the County Offices, Derby.
We are aware that many other
Treasurers issue similar booklets,
Man-
Chester and Nottinghamshire for example.
The fact that they are the work
of
the
Treasurer shows both the close connec-
tion between
his
work and the whole
of
the Authority’s activities and the impor-
tant responsibility he has in keeping the
public informed of the way their money
is
spent. The booklets are
an
important
original source for the researcher into
Local Government and we would
wel-
come copies from other Treasurers for the
Library of the Institute.
