The closures were running between junction 75 at Denton
Burn and junction 73 at Derwenthaugh from around 4pm and lasted until close to 7pm.
Delays on the roads spread to surrounding areas, especially on the A184 and A114 and in the vicinity of the Metrocentre.
While at one stage the delays on the A1 saw tailbacks up to around five miles.
