The Hull lightweight was hoping for a third crack at becoming world champion by taking on exciting US star Garcia in a WBC title final eliminator in Dallas.

But it is the flash American who is on the fast track to the top after he picked himself up off the canvas in the second round to become the first man to stop Campbell with a left hook to the body in the seventh.

Campbell, 33, has now suffered four career defeats including world title losses to Jorge Linares and Vasiliy Lomachenko in a division stacked with star talent.

The London 2012 Olympic gold medallist will now consider his future - but he faces a long road back to the top.

"Well I'm honestly heartbroken, I really wanted to bring the win back for you all (In the UK)," said Campbell. "I'm sorry for that. I hope you all enjoyed the fight.

"I have to take my hat off to Ryan Garcia, well done and a massive future ahead for him. I wish him all the best.

"He's very heavy-handed. Even when I was blocking the shots, I could feel them.

"That was the hardest shot I was ever hit with. I tried to get up but I couldn't."
