The average cost of a pad in the Lancashire town was just £101,000 last year, according to data from the Land Registry, with an average full-time worker there earning £30,932 a year

It means houses are only 3.3 times greater than the average wage - the lowest ratio in the UK.

The second most affordable destination is East Ayrshire, where the average house is £129,000.

The average property in Copeland, Cumbria, costs just £114,000 - 3.6 times the local salary.

North Ayrshire comes next with homes costing £131,000, or 3.7 times the average wage.
