Mother's emotional return to ward where son died

His mum, Dionne, has previously told of her lifelong gratitude to staff at the unit for their love and care during the final days of the 14-year-old's life

And this weekend she returned to the ward to deliver Easter eggs to families spending the bank holiday by their children's bedsides.

And Dionne, who also bought a card for the nurses that cared for Gordon, got the chance to thank some of them in person.

The 38-year-old said: "It was emotional going back to the ward for the first time since I left Gordon there.

"There were a few tears. I saw some of the nurses who looked after Gordon and it was lovely to say 'thank you' to them. It's crazy how they still remembered me and Gordon because there is so many kids in and out on a daily basis."

Gordon was injured when a violent clash broke out between two gangs in Elswick in November 2022.

Passers-by desperately tried to give the teenager CPR when he collapsed in the street after being taken away from the scene of the fight.

He was taken to the RVI where Dionne spent six days by his bed hoping and praying he would pull through, but he had already suffered severe brain damage. When scans confirmed there was nothing more doctors could do for Gordon, and hospital staff put an extra bed in the room so Dionne could cradle her son in her arms as he passed away.

Six teenagers stood trial for Gordon's murder, but all were cleared of the charge in January with Carlos Neto and Lawson Natty being convicted of manslaughter. Last month
