Mum, 59, was made redundant -now she's a professional declutterer

The mum-of-three decided to look for something new as she didn't want another office job or to call time on working life altogether. Jennie had a growing passion for decluttering and put all her energy into retraining and launched her decluttering business full-time

She bought books on how to organise homes, attended workshops and joined the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers APDO to meet others and further her knowledge in the field. After gaining some experience, Jennie launched her business -Kent and Sussex Decluttering -in August 2023 and began offering her services to customers in Kent and the surrounding areas. She now attends to clients five days a week -helping clients to declutter their homes before donating discarded items to charity.

Jennie, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, said: "I've worked in the media all my life and I was really devastated when I lost my job. I really enjoyed my job and I worked there for a long time.

"But I'm nowhere near retirement age yet and I didn't feel like stopping work yet. I was working three days a week at the office and doing the decluttering on the side so once I was made redundant I thought this is it I'm going to go for it.

"I didn't want to look for another office job and start again. I love the decluttering and organising, so why not go for it

"I wanted full control over what I was doing and taking it into my own hands. I love being my own boss and I really like the physical side of it as well, it's very different from an office space.

"Getting out and about meeting people, it's great. I've got some lovely testimonials on my website saying how much it's helped and changed people's lives.

"There's a great community around the decluttering business. I'm part of APDO and they have conferences, training and meetups and it really helps to add to your skill set."
