When the £13 million Showtown project is completed in two years' time, it will complement the Comedy Carpet on the Promenade that commemorates in granite the names, jokes and catch-phrases of more than 1,000 comedians who have played the resort. The whole world of showbiz seems to have appeared in the town at some time. W C Fields was a Tower Circus juggler before the First World War and 100 years later Peter Kay used the same venue when he appeared Live From The Top of the Tower. Performers have included everybody from Gracie Fields to the Beatles, and Morecambe and Wise to Frank Sinatra. When I arrived for an eight-year stint on the town's Evening Gazette many years ago, I walked straight into showbiz.
