Museum plans spark fears over loss of heritage

In 2016, the Tolson Museum at Moldgreen was earmarked for closure, along with Dewsbury Museum and Red House Museum at Gomersal. The latter two are long since closed, but it was agreed that the Tolson would stay open until an alternative venue was found

The Tolson's collections have since become a feature of the Cultural Heart plans and are set to be moved across to a new central Huddersfield museum. This will be located in the former library building at Princess Alexandra Walk by 2030.

What will happen to the building beyond this point is yet to be determined, sparking outrage among local councillors and the wider community.

However, council bosses have made it clear that the Tolson will not be used as a museum, but will still be used for recreational and educational purposes, as is stated by the covenant.

Tuesday's Cabinet meeting saw Clr Alison Munro (Almondbury, Lib Dems) attend, seeking assurance that the historic building won't be left to wrack and ruin once its collections are transferred to the new Cultural Heart venue.

She said: "The fact that the Tolson

Museum's collection is planned to be moved to the town centre is going to bolster the regeneration of the town centre but heritage is going to be ripped out at a local level."

Clr Munro also expressed concern that no one had come forward to take the museum on since its closure was agreed eight years ago. She requested that the Tolson be safeguarded in the council's plans until it's taken on by a trust.
