What have they been watching on TV, what books have they been reading, music they've been listening to, and who has been influential in their life? Most celebrities seem to be either predictable, pretentious or drop into default mode to provide what they believe the public expect

I did it myself when I was a guest on Desert Island Discs about 35 years ago. This was not on Radio 4 with Sue Lawley, but the Hospital Radio version at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

With my modest success in fiction, I chose Paperback Writer as one record to combine the Beatles with a plug for the latest book, and added Mozart to show my serious side. All this and messages to patients.
