New care home plan submitted on eyesore site

Muller Property Group has submitted plans for a home of up to 60 beds for land on Thomas Street, which was previously occupied by Eastlawns, a Kirklees Council care home and centre. It says the scheme could create 50 new jobs

It is almost ten years since permission was granted for the complex to be demolished and replaced by 12 semidetached homes. The £1.5m project was to be built by Kirklees Council and managed by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing. However that scheme was shelved and the land has become overgrown. The former Eastlawns site, now described as "a derelict eyesore", fronts onto Thorncliffe Street to the east. Brian Street runs to the south.

Last year local Lib Dem councillors Anthony Smith and Cahal Burke called for the 0.7-acre plot to be turned into a car park.

That suggestion was rejected by a senior Labour councillor as being too expensive as the authority would have to buy back the land from private ownership. Now chief executive of Muller Property Group, Colin Muller, said his company has identified "a significant shortage of assisted living bedspaces" within Lindley and the local surrounding areas and that there is demand "for...
