Launched in the spring,
No
Secrets
,the government’s latest
adult protection guidance is expect-
ed to have a major impact on all
agencies involved and interested in
adult abuse. Here,using a novel
approach, Claudine McCreadie, one
of the country’s leading elder abuse
researchers, looks at what No
Secrets will involve for those
charged with its implementation in
local areas, while providing a range
of useful insights and hints.

Received at the beginning of May 2000
by Mrs Elspeth Hope from her son, George.
Dear Mum
Just a brief note to tell you that I am the new LOMAC (lead
officer and multi-agency coordinator) for adult protection!!
I am amused that the relevant circular is 2000/007!! Naturally,
I’m quite bucked by this (belated in my view) recognition
that I do have some brain and capacity for thinking about a
problem and setting some systems in motion for addressing it.
It seems this is a really significant new development in our
work, but will be something of a challenge! Anyway, I might
get round the leafy lanes a bit more as I gather this is serious
inter-agency stuff. You will be interested that our primary aim
is to prevent abuse where possiblei and there’s quite a thrust
about consulting users and carers. Apparently, the guidance –
entitled No Secrets – carries something called Section 7 status,
which means that we have to do something about it and those
bright-eyed inspectors who have left the toil and heat of the
front line will be coming round to see how we are getting on.
I have until October next year (2001) to get something up
and running. I fear Helen and the kids will see even less
of me than they do at the moment! Look forward to hearing
from you as soon as you have time. Much love from us all.
George.
