Sentencing
Seminar
held in the L a w
School, Adelaide University, on February
27-2'8th 1970. There were two papers
presented to the plenary
sessions-
"Sentencing the Offender" by
Sir
Leslie
Herron,C.J.,
of New South Wales, and
"Psychiatrie Aspects of Sentencing" by
Dr. A. A. Bartholomew, of Victoria. Fol-
lowing the secend paper, five "workshops"
were formed and
the
members diseussed
the senteneing of the convicted defendents
in seven hypothetieal eases - all cases
being weIl described, in some cases
with
social and psychiatrie reports, in a hand-
out prior to the workshop discussions.
All five workshop groups were chaired by
aSupreme Court
Judge,
The chairmen
reported back the "sentences" and other
comments to a plenary session at
the
end
of the seminar.
John
Harry
Memorial. The Executive of
the A.N.Z. Society of Criminology at its
meeting on 13 April, 1970, appointed a
committee to conduct an appeal, the pro-
ceeds of which are
to
be used primarily
to promote an annual oration to be known
as the John Barry Memorial Lecture,
Members of the committee are
the
Presi-
dent, Sir George Paton, Mr. A. R. What-
more, Dr. A. A. Bartholomew and Mr. D.
Biles.
Members of
the
Society and many others
will be individually asked to donate to
the appeal in
the
near
future.
Dr, W. E. Lucas is to be congratulated on
having been appointed to
the
position of
Senior Leeturer in Forensie Psychiatry in
the Institute of Criminology, University of
Sydney,
inplaee
of Dr. O. V. Briscoe, who
has retumed to England.
Dr. D. ChappeU, Mr. Paul Wilson and
Mr. John Weston are undertaking astudy
of police public relations and a manpower
survey in Victoria for the Victoria Police
Association.
The Fourth United Nations Congress on
Prevention of Crime
and
the
Treatment
of
Offenders, Kyotot Japan, 17-26 August
1970. The note appearing in Vol. 2, No. 4,
of this Journal seeking participants in an
"afflnity group" travel scheme for this
Congress produced insufficient numbers to
enable such a scheme to be effected.
