The Centre of Criminology in
the
Univer-
sity
of Toronto, Canada,
has
announced
the establishment of an M.A. Degree in
Criminology commencing from September,
1971. The
course
of
study
is to be of 12
months' duration,
with
an emphasis on
inter-disciplinary study
and
research.
Persons holding afour-year
undergraduate
degree or
its
equivalent (including law
graduates) will be normally eligible to
apply. The
secretary
of
the
ne,v
Graduate
Faculty
is Richard G. Fox, formerly of
Melbourne University Law School. He
has
recommended
that
Australian applicants
should seek
an
award
under
the
Common-
wealth Fellowship scheme, which provides
fares and
tuition
for those pursuing over-
seas
graduate
study
in Commonwealth
countries.
Mr. Stanley W. Johnston, aVice-President
of
the
Criminology Society, has
been
ap-
pointed by
the
Minister for Social Welfare
to be Chairman of
the
Victoria Social
Welfare Training Council. (This is a
statutory
council established
under
the
Social Welfare
Act
1970.)
The
First
International Symposium on
"Victimology" will be held in
Jerusalem
from
September
2 to 6, 1973. This sym-
posium will be
under
the
joint auspices of
the
International
Society of Criminology,
the
Government of Israel
and
the
Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.
The
organization
and direction of
the
symposium is in
the
hands of Professor Israel Drapkin of
the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Dr. W. S. Matsdorf, previously of
the
pro-
bation service of New South Wales,
has
been appointed as a Research Associate to
Professor Shlomo Shoham, Director of
the
Institute
of Criminology and Criminal Law,
Tel Aviv University, Israel. Dr.
Matsdorf
is compiling material for a cross-cultural
study
of
the
incidence of deviant behaviour
resulting from
the
immigration process.

Jackson on his appointment as Chief
Commissioner of
the
Victoria Police Force.
The Sydney University
Ins
tit
ute
of
Criminology
has
contracted
with
the
Federal
Department
of Shipping
and
Transport to
undertake
a
study
of
the
penological
aspects
of road safety,
with
particular reference to
the
problems of
the
juvenile driver,
the
drunken
driver,
and
the comparative efficiency of various
"breathalyzer" systems. These
matters
are
currently
under
active research, and
the
institute conducted aseminar on
certain
of these topics on November 11, 1971.
Dr. W. E. Lucas
and
Mr. P. G.
Ward,
of
the
Sydney University
Institute
of Criminology,
are currently conducting research into
the
incidence of induced abortions (and com-
plications resulting therefrom) in Sydney,
with
particular
reference to
the
current
police campaign
against
the
activities of
illegal abortionists.

Gordon Hawkins, of
the Sydney University

was
recently invited by
the
A.B.C. to
take
part
in
their
series of
television documentaries titled "See It
My Way". The segment has now
been
filmed. In it, Gordon Hawkins explains
and discusses
the
concept of "The Over-
reach of the Criminal Law",
the
title of
the first
chapter
of his book, The Honest
Politician's Guide To Crime Control, co-
authored
with
Norval Morris.
The
South
Australian
Attorney-General,
the
Honourable L. King, announced
the
appointment of a Criminal Law and
Penal
Methods Reform Committee on December
14, 1971. The chairman of
the
committee
is the Honourable Justice Mitchell, of
the
Supreme 'Court of
South
Australia,
and
the
members are Professor Colin Howard,
Law
School, University of Melbourne, and Mr.
David Biles,
Lecturer
in Criminology,
lJniversity of Melbourne. The committee
has
the
power
to
co-opt Miss
Mary
Daunton-Fear, Senior
Lecturer
lin Law,
Adelaide University.
The committee
held
its first meeting on
December 20, 1971, and will focus
its
attention initially on penal methods
or
correctional techniques. Submissions from
individuals and organizations on this
topic
will be considered
early
in 1972.
