Keele University School of Law and School of Public Policy and Professional Practice are hosting
a study day:
The Mental Capacity Act: Five years on
The study day is relevant to anyone involved in practice with people who use services and for
whom mental capacity may be an issue. Participants will include social work practitioners, mental
health practitioners, service users and providers, and students of law, social work, medicine
and nursing. The study day will provide an excellent opportunity to explore in-depth, current
developments and practice surrounding the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
Key note speakers and workshops will address a review of the law, including caselaw
development; deprivation of liberty; safeguarding and capacity and assessing capacity; the role of
advocacy; safe recruitment; and communicating with people with cognitive impairment.
The study takes place on 22 June, 2010 between 10am and 4pm in the Chancellor’s Building
at Keele University, which is easily accessible by road or rail. The cost is £60.00 to include the
full study day programme, two course lunch and refreshments, certificate of attendance and free
