evidently resisted stoutly, because all his clothing was
torn
from his
body with the exception of his pants, his shoes,
and
his socks.
He
had
been shot from the rear, the bullet going through his heart, and also
struck over the head and his skull fractured.
This
took place near a
great pile of clay
and
mud, which had been excavated for the purpose
of making a basement for a new house being built. Once more the
Police borrowed from the Military Authorities
the
mine detector, and
after a few hours' work discovered the bullet in perfect condition in
the
mud
of this yard.
Prior to the advent of this invention,
and
its use for this purpose,
a search by Police Officers could have been made, extending over
weeks, without result. Yours truly,
GEORGE
SMITH,
Winnipeg, Canada. Chief Constable.
N.B.-I
am aware
that
British Police are using the Army mine
detector for this purpose,
but
Ithought you would like to know that
. we are also employing it in
Canada.-G.

SIR,
I am sending you an extract from the Ceylon Police Gazette of
November zoth, 1946, which gives details of
the
work done by two
young constables which, I venture to say, is worthy of notice.
Two
young, locally enlisted
and
trained, Ceylonese constables of
four years'
and
two years' service, in eight hours of night duty on a
beat, working together on foot between
10
p.m, and 6 a.m., made
four arrests in four separate cases.
In three cases
the
arrests were made on suspicion as a result of
good observation.
Two
proved to be cases of theft,
and
in the third
case
the
man
arrested proved to be an offender wanted for house-
breaking. All three cases were taken to the station at once, the persons
charged, and eventually convicted.
In
the fourth case
the
constables acted on a telephone message
disclosing an alleged offence in which ahired car was being used.
The
driver and the car were traced and taken to
the
police station,
