Old fashioned skills unveiled

The South-west Scotland branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association is offering novice and experienced dykers the chance to try out or test their skills in the art.

Both a training weekend and a dyking competition have been organised over the next four weeks - and spaces are still available, chairman Nic Coombey said.

"The branch is running the first training event since Covid at Rainton Farm, Cream o'Galloway, near Gatehouse on 11-12 September," he said.

"We have a good number of trainees coming along from far and near.

"We are also organising a competition at Kelton Mains on the Threave Estate for October 2.

"We are rather short of competitors at the moment and we would welcome anyone who would like to take part."

Drystane dykes, along with hedges, have been used for centuries to mark out field boundaries.

The walls are in constant need of repair through weather and stock damage.
