Twentieth
Century
Mrica,
Ed. P. J. M. McEwAN; Oxford University
Press, 1968; maps, bibliography
and
index;
pp.
517; 50s.
The
editor has collated nearly
100
"readings"
on Africa, extracts
from
books
and
journal articles by a widely catholic choice of authors.
In
the first volume,
such
is
the
limited historical knowledge of Africa
South
of
the
Sahara,
that
the
well balanced material collected here provides an excellent broad
picture of
the
once
"dark
continent"
from pre-history to
1800.
To
the
general reader
much
of
interest well told, to
the
student
an invaluable background to stimulate
more
detailed reading, to
both
their
knowledge enhanced.
One
small
point:
the lofty
Kalambo
falls form
the
boundary
between Zambi.a
and
Tanzania
and
so are shared by
both
countries.
In
the
second volume,
the
twentieth
century
does
not
provide similar
scope.
Were
Africa to contain
ten
not
forty states, material of this
kind
could be useful
to
students:
as it is one
must
question
the
value of learning history by snippets -
the
danger of a veneer of knowledge lacking any real
depth
would seem too great.
The
New
States
of
Mrica,
by
ARNOLD
RIVKIN;
Foreign Policy Association,
New York; pp. 63; $0.85·
Writing
with wide knowledge
and
experience of Africa,
Dr.
Rivkin has achieved no
mean
feat in containing his
monograph
to so few pages. Aimed it would seem at
the
well educated American who may
not
be versed in African affairs,
and
perhaps
who
would
not
find time to delve deep into heavy volumes,
Dr.
Rivkin's enlightened,
liberal
pen
will serve a very useful purpose.

tion

other
useful data about the
