Plan for alcohol sales at Asda petrol station are refused

Gateshead Council refused the licence for the garage, on Whickham Front Street, following 11 written objections from residents, supported by Blaydon MP Liz Twist

Asda had originally applied for a 24-hour alcohol licence alongside a late-night refreshment permit in February this year but the application was later reduced to 6am to 10pm for alcohol and the late-night food application was withdrawn.

Mr Richard Taylor, Asda's legal representative, told the committee and the public present that the original proposal was "ham-fisted" and a "mistake" and apologised "for any concerns we have unwittingly, inadvertently caused."
