Police Athletic Association
ANNUAL
CHAMPIONSHIP
WHEN the Police Athletic Association staged its annual
championship meeting at Derby, for the first time, on
15th July, no fewer than three records went by the board.
Considering that this was the sixth festival such adevelopment
points to a steady improvement in the athletic standard of the
forces.
The
particular events in which new figures were
recorded were the high jump, mile cycle, and putting the 16 lb.
weight. As an exhibition of all-round prowess the meeting,
bringing together as it did competitors from England, Scot-
land, Wales, and Northern Ireland, was both asurprise and a
delight to Derby sportsmen, familiar as they are with cham-
pionship displays promoted by other national organisations.
That
there were not more of them present was to be regretted.
The
Duke of Devonshire,
Lord
Lieutenant of Derbyshire,
was the patron.
There
was a social side to the gathering, as
when the Mayor of Derby (Ald. A. E. Moult) entertained at
an informal luncheon at the Midland Hotel many of the heads
of police forces and sports officials. His Worship cordially
welcomed his guests and response was made on their behalf by
Mr. M. J. Martin, Chief Constable of Perthshire and Chairman
of the Association, who also took the opportunity of thanking
the Chief Constable of Derby (Capt. H. Rawlings) for
the
assistance which he and his subordinates had rendered in
connexion with arrangements.
The
company included, in
addition to those already named, Col. J. D. Kerr, commanding
the 5th Territorial Battalion of the Sherwood
Foresters;
Sir
Charles Markham, Chief of Police in Northern
Ireland;
Mr.
R. Matthews, Chief Constable of
Leeds;
Mr.
T.
Wells,
