The
Council of the Police Gold Medal Essay Competition have the
honour to present their report on the Competition which closed on
the
rst
November, 1934.
The
subject
was-
"THE
PREVENTION
AND
DETECTION
OF
SERIOUS
CRIME."
The
number of entries was larger than it has been for some years
but
there was no essay of outstanding merit.
The
Council therefore regret
that they are unable to make any recommendation for the award of His
Majesty's Gold Medal for the 1934 Competition.
The
Council award the second prize of twenty guineas
to-
Inspector Cecil R. Hewitt, City of London Police, and the third prize
of ten guineas
to-
Detective-Officer Harry Kitchin, Chesterfield Borough Police.
The
followingcompetitor has received" Hon.
Mention"
for his essay

Detective-Sergeant Arthur Cain, Metropolitan Police, and the following
have received "
Mention"

Police Constable Cyril Ernest Turner, Swindon Borough Police.
C. R. Peters, District Superintendent of Police, Moradabad United
Provinces, India.
Detective Inspector James Brailsford, Derbyshire Constabulary.
Sergeant Alan Beresford, West Riding Constabulary, Wakefield.
The
Council announce with regret that Capt. C. Mitchell Innes; C.B.E.,
has been compelled to resign from the Honorary Secretaryship. His place
has been taken by Sir Francis Griffith, C.S.I., O.B.E., of New Scotland Yard.
The
Council also announce that they have received a further grant of
£40
from the National Police
Fund
subject to the usual conditions.
Funds for awarding the prizes for the Gold Medal Essay Competition
are badly needed and, as no doubt some Forces and private individuals might
like to contribute to this object, any donations would be gratefully received
and should be forwarded
