Subject MatterArticle
illuminating criminal cases has been as instructive as ever; Chief
Superintendent Devlin has supplied us with a wealth of matter to
assist the candidate for the promotion examinations; that famous
Punch artist, Mr. Starke, has miraculously maintained the high
level of his kindly, witty and beautifully drawn cartoons; and our
"
little"
features have gone on summarizing police news and views
from all over the country and all over the world.
The Editor is glad to take this opportunity of sending Christ-
mas greetings and of thanking all our readers, our contributors
and our advertisers for their support. He is, as always, grateful
to chief officers for their goodwill and help.

RESULTS OF
THE
POLICE
JOURNAL
PHOTOGRAPmC
COMPETITION
There was a good entry for our first Photographic Competition,
"Police
in Action ", and some very skilled and imaginative pic-
tures were submitted. The Judge, Mr. Harold H. Salisbury, Chief
Constable of the North Riding of Yorkshire, had regard both to
the quality of the photography and to its impact on the viewer.
The First Prize (£20) was awarded to Det. Sgt. H. J. Wheal
(Surrey Constabulary) for ., Night
Check".
The Second Prize (£15) was awarded to
P.e.
S. A. Painter (East
Suffolk Constabulary)
for"
Flood
Alert".
The Third Prize (£10) was awarded to Det. Insp. James Mac-
Gooch (Invemesshire Constabulary)
for"
Caimgorm Rescue".
The Judge highly commended Det. Insp. Roy Breaks (Essex
Constabulary) for three photographs,
"Armed?
To be or not to
be?"
"Night
Encounter"
and .. I'm not playing".
We publish the pictures mentioned above
and
those of some
other entrants in our pictorial supplement.
We have every intention of holding a similar competition next
year. Meanwhile we should like to offer our best thanks to all
who sent in entries and to their chief officersfor so kindly giving
their approval of the pictures being published.
