Preface
This
special
issue
of
Cooperation
and
Con-
flict
comprises
analyses
of
Nordic
elite
at-
titudes
and
Nordic
government
policies
concerning
questions
of
integration
and
cooperation
in
Europe
in
general
and
in
the
Nordic
area
in
particular.
In
analysing
the
situation
following
the
enlargement
of
the
European
Community,
the
various
authors
stress
the
interdepen-
dence
and
interplay
of
factors
at
three
different
levels,
viz.
national,
Nordic
and
European.
The
scope
and
prospects
for
Nordic
cooperation,
the
Nordic
area
as
a
transition
zone
between
East
and
West,
and
the
uniqueness
of
the
positions
of
each
of
the
Nordic
countries
in
the
Nordic
as
well
as
European
context
are
central
themes.
All
of
the
articles,
except
one
which
deals
with
Iceland
and
was
added
later
to
complete
the
picture,
were
originally
presented
as
working
papers
at
a
Nordic
seminar
at
Leangkollen
near
Oslo
in
the
autumn
of
1973
and
are
published
here
in
a
somewhat
revised
form.
The
seminar
was
organized
as
part
of
a
research
project
on
Nordic
integration
at
the
Institute
of
Political
Science,
University
of
Oslo,
and
was
financed
by
the
Nordic
Cooperation
Committee
for
International
Politics
and
the
Norwegian
Research
Council
for
Science
and
the
Humanities.
As
leader
of
the
project
I
wish
to
thank
authors
as
well
as
financial
supporters
for
their
contribu-
tions.
A
special
word
of
gratitude
is
ex-
tended
to
mag.
art.
Odd
Fosseidbriten

his
invaluable

in
organizing
