Process of moving out tower block residents under way

Holme Park Court and Bishops Court, both in Berry Brow, are to be knocked down and replaced with lowrise blocks. Kirklees Council is running a six-phase plan that has begun with talks to tenants to help rehouse them

That is phase one. Phase two involves the design of the new houses followed by public consultation (phase three), finalising designs, obtaining planning permission (which the council would give to itself) and approval by the decisionmaking Cabinet (phase four), the demolition of the existing highrise blocks (phase five), and finally the building of the new homes (phase six).

The council says draft designs are expected to be ready for public consultation by summer 2023. No dates have been set for the other phases.

The project has been budgeted at £36.78m and is part of a wider £90m programme to make "vital improvements" to thousands of properties across the borough.

There are 196 flats across the two 17-storey blocks at Berry Brow. They were constructed around 50 years ago. Five floors will be prioritised at a time starting with Bishops Court before moving onto Holme Park Court once the entire block is empty.

Tenants living on "priority" floors will be categorised as Band B, giving them the highest banding possible when bidding on properties on the council's housing register "Choose N Move".
