Project Jupiter is launched
P
roject Jupiter
is
a UGC funded project spon-
sored by the JANET User Group for
Libraries and managed by Glasgow University
Library. It has its background in the UGC's
major commitment to and investment in library
networking, undertaken in 1987. At that time,
the JUGL Committee submitted a bid to the
UGC to provide training and education for
university libraries; this received a favourable
response and outline funding was earmarked.
Subsequently, at the Committee meeting of
JUGL on
May 20th
1988,
it
was
announced that
the UGC had confirmed its support for this
project. It
then
asked the JUGL committee to in-
vite tenders from universities to act as host in-
stitution for the development of a training
programme for library
staff.
Jupiter
is
intended
to provide a programme of training, seminars,
and publications in order to develop an under-
standing of the potential of networked applica-
tions
and
services.
It
is
expected
to
work closely
with the JUGL committee, and keep in active
contact with all other relevant groups. The
project is funded at £60,000 over a
2-year
period.
A number of
goals
have been identified for the
project, all with the ultimate objective of ensur-
ing
that university libraries have personnel who
can promote and support efficient and effective
use of
the
JANET network.
Firstly,
a
programme of regional training semi-
nars will be devised with the aim of ensuring
that at least two representatives of each UK
university library
have the
opportunity
to
attend
a one-day seminar without the need for over-
night accommodation. Course worksheets will
be
used during the seminars and
as
training aids
at the participants' home institutions. Sup-
plementary training will be provided
in the
form
of worked examples on the JANET bulletin
boards.
The
proposed training programme
is
for
six
regional seminars, each of which will cover:
hardware requirements
communications software
local, national and international networks
present applications
integration of JANET into present library
practice
future applications
Following
the
round of regional meetings,
a
na-
tional meeting will be hosted by Glasgow
University Library to provide an opportunity for
the exchange of applications and experience.
The aim of this phase of the project is that each
university library should then have a minimum
of
2
professional staff members capable of un-
dertaking local training, with the support of the
centrally provided courseware.
Following the seminars, site visits will be made
to libraries on request. The intention is to
provide technical support, if relevant, and more
particularly aid and expertise in particular ap-
plications areas, such as inter-library loans, ex-
ternal databases etc.
During the course of the project, the current
printed guides Will be re-drafted and updated
and new guides specific to library implementa-
tions will be introduced. The difficulties ex-
perienced in using the Beginners Guide to
JANET will be examined; the Guide will then
be re-written as necessary, using a problem-
orientated
approach.
The new guides on
specific
library applications will be produced from
camera-ready copy, in formats which can be
readily updated. In addition, it is intended that
