Prolific bicycle thief avoids jail sentence

Over a four-month period, renowned crook Callum Graylish stole the pedal cycles from three locations in Newcastle and North Tyneside.

A court heard that those included Longbenton High School and the Freeman Hospital.

The bikes, worth more than £1,000 in total, belonged to a pupil and staff member respectively, prosecutors said.

On all occasions, Graylish was captured on CCTV using bolt cutters to break security chains on the bicycles before making off with them.

The 25-year-old, who has a long history of similar offending, was arrested and pleaded guilty to three counts of theft of pedal cycle when he appeared before magistrates in Newcastle.

Gurjot Kaur, prosecuting, said Graylish, of Cambourne Grove, in Bensham, Gateshead, first targeted Longbenton High School on November 19 last year.

She continued: "The defendant stole a limited edition bike, which belonged to a pupil at the school.

"CCTV showed the defendant attending and breaking the lock on the bike chain before cycling away.

"In interview, he initially denied the offence, saying he hadn't been in Longbenton for three years."

The court heard that Graylish next targeted the Freeman Hospital on March 6 this year, when he used the same method to steal an £800 bike belonging to a staff member.
