Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain how, if company’s digital experience is a good one,
employees can work efficiently and feel positive about their environment while, if a company’s digital
experience is poor, staff can become unmotivated and avoid using the systems that are critical to the
organization.
Design/methodology/approach The authors consulted with user interface/user experience (UI/UX)
professionals to explain why attention needs to be paid to UI/UX in the employee experience and how
to assess an organization’s current situation.
Findings It is possible to prevent poor UI/UX and keep employees satisfied by improving an
organization’s digital employee experience using UX best practices from the tech companies who have
invested billions in getting it exactly right.
Originality/value Understanding UX principles allows you to observe and evaluate how the systems are
working, then incorporate UX best principles into the design to boost productivity, happiness and output.

The employee experience begins the moment someone sees a job opening at your
company. While a prospective employee may already be familiar with your brand,
once they begin to consider you as an employer and imagine a career with your
company, they initiate a process with your company. From the application process to the
hiring process and their daily work life, every employee has needs to be met and
expectations for the experience of having those needs met – essentially, the employee
experience.
In the corporate environment, much of the modern employee experience takes place
online. Expectations for digital experiences have grown higher and higher as employees
compare every interaction to their best online user experiences.
Standards for user experience (UX) are set by companies with skilled developers, UX
experts and UI (user interface) designers. In addition, these companies have revenue
motivations for delivering exceptional user experiences, as their businesses can only thrive
if their users are happy and productive. Think of top digital brands such as Facebook,
Amazon, Gmail, etc. These are not only tools your employees use every day but also
companies that have set the standard for the digital experiences your employees now
expect from you. By investing your resources in improving the digital experience for your
employees, you can create a positive experience and boost workplace productivity.
What makes a good UX?
Sure, you probably recognize that Amazon’s ecommerce platform is really easy to use, but
have you ever thought about why it is so intuitive?
