The Policy Advisory Committee on
Sexual Offences should recruit Cynthia
Payne as a member because she would be
able to offer first hand information on
many of the aspects of the committee's
work. In particular she would be able to
recommend how a discreet, well
organized brothel can be organized
providing a wide range of sexual services,
without organized crime being involved,
or women compelled to act as prostitutes
against their will.
Clients of Ambleside Avenue included
barristers (who the police permitted to
give false names to cover their presence),
members of the clergy and parliament, as
well as businessmen, the elderly and
handicapped.
Paul Bailey's account is very readable,
raises the issues of why the police raided
the establishment, and the hypocrisy of
the law which penalizes women who
provide sexual services, but not the men
who avail themselves - there would be
no prostitutes if there weren't men
seeking their services!
Cynthia's story is fascinating, funny,
and gives a view of present day brothel
life rarely documented in this country. A
must for all police officers, even if only to
see if they can discover the identity of the
former Superintendent who used to take
off his clothes to clean the cooker at
Ambleside Avenue! Ken Russell

"A scholarly book which will appeal to
the student as well as the practitioner";"I

book to those concerned with the
administration of criminal law", are
comments made by the Lord Chief

render unto it the attribute of excellence.
The historical exigesis is long enough
to provide an interesting backcloth, but
sufficiently concise not to intimidate the
uncommitted reader.

Thereafter, the
book
develops through
16 chapters of "legal" subject matter to
encompass all those multifarious aspects
of the law which have a part to play in the
sentencing process.
Well set out, with a wealth of material
- reference is made to no fewer than 900
cases - this major work is the
culmination of years of experience,
contemporaneously recorded in note
form and finally produced in impressive
style: a literary contribution of great
merit, indeed! E.D.
