Residents in fear after violent disturbance

Those living in North Park Street were woken in the early hours of Friday morning to a head-on crash, thugs wielding weapons and blue lights as police swarmed the area

West Yorkshire Police rushed to the scene at 1.30am following reports of a disturbance involving a number of people and vehicles.

Officers attended and found two men with injuries. Both were taken to hospital for treatment, but their injuries were not believed to be life threatening, police say.

The incident has left residents terrified as they woke to find police searching gardens and the nearby reservoir for what they believe to be weapons used in the disturbance.

Recalling the horrifying ordeal, one woman, who did not want to be named, said: "Two cars had crashed into each other head on.

"I don't know if anyone was injured but they had to be as air bags had gone off. We heard it about 1.30am and my husband rushed out to check it wasn't our van they had crashed into.

"We'd heard them racing about before it happened. There were two cars and loads of people with baseball bats and knives.

"It was awful. Horrendous. It used to be quiet round here all people our age but this has made us want to move."

She added: "I couldn't sleep after it happened at 1.30am, I'm so tired."

Another woman, who also did not want to be named, said: "Two people crashed head on, then there [were] more cars and people down the street. Someone got attacked with a machete. It's scary but where can you move to? In these times it's the same everywhere."
