Social care changes 'not going to help'

Clr Josh Fenton-Glynn (Lab, Calder) said Government changes, including charging reform, were an "honest stab" at improving the system but believed measures would fall short

Some people would lose their homes to fund care and it did not solve all-age disability issues - which make up 50 per cent of Calderdale Council's care budget - or resolve care staff pay problems.

Clr Fenton-Glynn, the council's Cabinet member for Adult Services and Wellbeing, told the full Calderdale Council: "It's an honest stab at doing it but it's going to squeeze a lot of people in the middle.

"People are going to lose their homes and it doesn't help our care staff.

"In the long run we need sustainable wages and a sustainable career path.

"We need to recognise it is not good enough to not treat care work as skilled...
