'Some customers don't have £2.50 for tray of chips'

Farmers have struggled due to wet weather and rising costs of fertiliser and fuel.

"If it does go up any more, we may have to put a few pence on (the prices) and hope customers understand the situation," Taher said.

Olde England Fisheries in New Street has previously been branded 'Britain's cheapest chippy' thanks to a small portion of fish and chips costing just under £5.

At the moment, a bag of chips costs £2.50 and, even at this price, not everyone can afford them says Taher.

He sometimes has customers calling in who can't stretch to a bag of chips.

He puts this down to the cost of living and people being short of money.

"There's a bit of a lull in the business at the moment," he said.

"But that's just everywhere, with the energy prices and the cost of living, with everything going up.

"People come in here and ask for a tray of chips and when I say £2.50 they walk out.

"I pull them back and tell them to give what they have.

"It happens quite regularly nowadays. "A lot of the time we get students from college who look at the prices and a couple of them don't have enough money on them."
