Apart from saving cash, the great advantage of raising your own plants is you have a far wider choice of varieties than you could ever buy ready-grown in the shops.

So which to choose? For all-round kitchen use choose bush basil, which is readily available and versatile.

The best choice for pesto is lettuceleaved basil, which has large leaves and is also known as Neapolitana. It's brilliant torn up with lettuce in a green salad and great for heavy basil users since you get a lot more leaf area per plant than with most other types.
