Stepdad: I'll never forgive myself for killing Sebastian

Andrezej Latoszewski, 36, has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of the teenager, who was found with serious injuries at his home in Leeds Road, Huddersfield on August 13

Sebastian later died in hospital and his mother, Agniezska Kalinowska and her long-term partner Latoszewski, were arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter, neglect and causing or allowing the death of a child.

During the trial at Leeds Crown Court, jurors have been told Sebastian was physically abused and "tortured" by his mother and stepfather in the months before his death. Footage caught on a home CCTV system showing the abuse has been presented to the court.

On Thursday, Latoszewski entered the witness box to give evidence and told how he had been with Kalinowska 11 years before their arrest.

He said he knew of her "by sight" before being formally introduced to her on a visit to Poland to see his own son, who was born in 2008. He said Kalinowska moved to the UK to live in a house in Wakefield with him and her partner at the time. After moving to various addresses in Huddersfield, Wakefield and Heckmondwike, Latoszewski said the couple settled in Leeds Road, where Sebastian joined them in October last year. They had lived at the property for five years before his death.

Sebastian had killed Sebastian and will "never forgive" himself for it. He admitted he had been cruel and physically violent to the teenager - something he said he was "utterly embarrassed" of. Latoszewski told jurors he did not intend to cause Sebastian's death and when questioned whether he intended to hurt him so badly his ribs would be fractured, Latoszewski said "it would never have crossed my mind".
