Stewart admits to spot of frustration

It was a big moment in the game with the Black Cats two goals to the good and when Alex Palmer brought down the Sunderland forward it would have given Lee Johnson's side an opportunity to go ahead overall for the first time in the tie.

However, referee Michael Salisbury waved away the protests of 10,000 red-and-white fans - much to everyone's dismay in the Stadium of Light.

Speaking after the game, Stewart (right) said: "Being the player on the end of it I thought it was a stonewaller.

"I thought it was a penalty all day. The goalkeeper has come out and got nowhere near the ball and collided with me.

"I don't know how the ref eree has not given it.

"There were a couple of decisions which I think he got wrong and that probably adds to the frustration. "We put a lot into it but the refereeing decisions are out of our control." The Black Cats came flying out of the blocks and were level on aggregate after a blistering start to the game.

Stewart scored the opener after just 13 minutes and Charlie Wyke added Sunderland's second just after the half-hour mark.

Stewart added: "The first half was exactly how we planned it.

"We came out all guns blazing and pressed Lincoln high, put them under pressure, scored the goals and were right back in the tie.

"Second half was probably a bit more frustrating and we did not find those same levels, but we did put a lot into that first half and in the end we were disappointed in that dressing room to have not come through the tie.

"You do have to give Lincoln a bit of credit.

"They settled down and started to play and we did not really cause them as many problems maybe up until they scored their goal.

"Then Burgey saved the penalty and we were back in it. However, you have to give them credit - they are the team going to Wembley."
