Super League crowds not hit by TV coverage

Premier Sports has tabled a proposal to show every match from rugby league's second tier next year, though it does not have full support from the clubs

Last month, clubs debated the offer of a two-year contract with the option of a third.

There was very much a split between the clubs, with six approving, seven rejecting and one abstaining when asked for their views on the deal.

The matter is with the RFL Board and it's believed that no decision is imminent. That said, the proposal is still thought to be on the table from the broadcaster.

The main concern that clubs have about the proposal is the potential impact it will have on their attendances and, as a consequence, the revenue they will receive at the gates.

The rights fee in year one is £50,000 and they believe the money they will earn from the deal won't cover the loss in revenue.

But there's plenty of evidence across global sport to suggest that games being televised doesn't have an impact on the physical number of people attending games and this year's Super League campaign is another example of that so far.

For the first time ever, every Super League game is being broadcast this year, with supporters being able to watch games on Sky Sports, Super League+ or the BBC, or a combination of them all.
