TALKING ABOUT STRESS
We all haveour ups and downs and at some time may wonder whether we,
or someone close, may be undergoing a 'nervous breakdown'. A lot of
ignorance and mystery surrounds this term, which covers many
psychological problems.
Whether you're suffering from stress, phobia, anxiety, depression,
eating disorder, alcohol addiction or schizophrenia itis as well to know the
signs which show that things are going wrong. These could be physical
and psychological e.g.
PHYSICAL
SYMPTOMS
nausea
cold sweats
dizziness
diarrhoea
loss of appetite
digestive problems
headaches
chest pains
shaking
tingling
hair loss
butterflies
dry mouth
difficulty in getting
breath
light headedness
BEHAVIOURAL
SYMPTOMS
irritability
increased alcohol
increased cigarettes
decreased sexual desire
absenteeism
school refusal
avoiding situations
avoiding social contact
loss of concentration
difficulty in getting
to sleep
EMOTIONAL
SYMPTOMS
depression
loss of confidence
worry
preoccupation
with physical
symptoms
restlessness
There is more openeness today, people who have suffered 'nervous
breakdowns' talk about them, many in public life. For example John
Ogden the pianist has described his experience of manic depression;
Evelyn Waugh wrote about his period of bizarre thought and behaviour in
