This will mean that users of other federated networks (ones that don't have a central server owned by an individual or company) will be able to see posts and replies from Threads users, and vice versa… a bit like how we can email users can contact each other regardless of their provider

We're delighted to see Meta roll out the ability to join the 'Fediverse' for test users in the US, Canada, and Japan. If you opt in, Meta says users on other services that use the ActivityPub protocol, like Mastodon, will be able to "search for and follow your profile, view your posts, interact with your content, and share your content to anyone on or off their server".

There are still some limitations - Meta says you can't yet see replies and follows from the Fediverse off the Threads network, and it can't promise that posts you delete on Threads will be deleted from other services too.
