Detective Superintendent. Essex Police.
THE
BRENTWOOD
DOUBLE
MURDER
A call at 11.50 p.m. on the night of Saturday, July 19. 1980.
despatched two police vehicles to 41 Milton Road, Brentwood.
within the Basildon Division of the Essex Police area.
The
call,
received from a neighbour who believed there were intruders at the
address, was not unusual, particularly on a Saturday night.
The
officers' arrival followed the usual procedure; A quick word
with the neighbour informant and then.
"You
go round the back
while I watch the front". The first officer going to the rear of the
house found a small oval hole in the window next to the catch, and
the window open
about
I foot.
In view of the nature of the call the officers climbed into the house
and the
horror
of what they found will never leave their minds. The
full story leading to their find will never be fully revealed, as it
remains locked in the twisted mind of the murderer which could not
be opened by the investigating officers appointed on
that
fateful
Saturday.
The
scene was set in a semi-detached house in the older part of
Brentwood. Acorner house with a large hedge running down the
side, affording acertain privacy to the occupants. or to an intruder.
The house had been modernized on the ground floor and was now
more or less open plan with the kitchen leading through to a dining
room
and lounge. Stairs from the lounge lead to two roomsupstairs, a
bedroom and a room being converted to a nursery. The house was
typical of a young married couple's first house. (The premises next
door
were empty).
After
findingno
sign of life in the house, the officers retreated to
preserve the scene for the arrival of the investigating and scenes of
crime officers. Investigating officers quickly arrived to find two
naked bodies on the ground floor, a male and female. The female was
lying on her back in a classic rape position between the staircase and
porch, in the centre of the dining area.
Her
wrists were tied with
nylon stockings which at one time had been joined.
The
male was lying on his back near the
bottom
of the stairs.
Around his neck was tied a dressing gown belt and nylon stockings;
around
his right wrist was a blue necktie, whilst tied to his left wrist
was a nylon stocking; a pillow case was draped over his right foot.
Each body bore hideous injuries. There were great quantities of
blood in many places. 'Nothing was touched as it was immediately
apparent
that
the scenes of crime examination was going- to be so
important.
