Australian Council of Trade Unions. Considering the political nature of these
unions this is surely an unhealthy relationship.
The reader should be wary of generalisations in a book dealing with eight
different police forces.
For
example we are told that on normal duty Australian
police are not armed but in fact the practice varies from State to State. Com-
parison of British and Australian figures relating to crime detection should be
looked at in the light of different definitions of a statistical crime. In Victoria
each year many hundreds of arrests for the offence of drunk and disorderly
are shown as detected crimes!
The Australian police forces have been the first in the field with a number
of police techniques and Mr. O'Brien quite rightly reminds us of this; never-
theless his book is written with modesty and in a straightforward manner.
For
any police officer who looks beyond the narrow confines of his own force
boundary this book should prove of great interest, revealing as it does a British
idea at work in an antipodean environment.
