THE
POLICE JOURNAL
The Analyst, vol. 60, No. 709. An abstract of a paper by 1. C. Ritsema
on the identification of gum arabic; mentions that the benzidine blue test, so
often used for the preliminary identification of blood, is given also by gum
arabic, even when several years old.
The
reaction is of course due to the
presence of a peroxidase in each case,
but
this mention of another substance
which gives a positive reaction only emphasizes the fact that great care must be
exercised in using such preliminary tests, and that any reliance on them
must be backed up with expert examination of the stain by other means.
