THE
Ministry
of
Labour Gazette
has a yearly article (May issue) on
the entry
of
young people into employment, describing the proportions
of young people starting work at various ages, their skill level, and
the different occupational categories they go into. There is, however,
no information as to the size
of
firms in which young people take their
first
job. The results of an enquiry made during the course of research
into the problems of young people, in their
first
years at work, suggest
that more information might be of general interest.
In order to obtain the sample required for this project it was
necessary to have information on the total population
of
the city
of
Leicester leaving school in summer and Christmas
1960,
and in summer
and Christmas
1962,’
a total
of
4,160
young people. For each, the name
of the school attended, the date
of
birth and school-leaving, the nature
of the first job, and the name of the firm entered, were collected.’

With the exception of those born earlier than
1944,
and of girls with one year or more
of further full-time education. Other minor exceptions were those who had attended
schools for the physically handicapped, of that small number totally educated abroad.
and of those who had entered the Armed Forces. Mrs. Jones, our research secretary,
has helped
us
a great deal in collecting such information.

We are grateful to the Leicester branch

the Ministry
of
Labour, and to the City
of Leicester Youth Employment Service for making the information available.
