Stafford Beer
Mr. Stafford Beer is Visiting Professor of Cybernetics at Man-
chester University
and
Business School, Visiting Professor of General
Systems at the Open University, President of the Operational
Research Society (London), Vice President and Governor of the
Society for General Systems Research (Washington), Executive
Member of the United Kingdom Automation Council, and Lan-
chester Prizewinner for one of his books, Decision and Control,
which was judged the best contribution to the literature of manage-
ment science for 1966.
He was a pioneer of
both
operational research and cybernetics in
Britain.
For
thirteen years he was head of OR for United Steel. He
then founded SIGMA (Science in General Management Limited),
now incorporated in the
METRA
Consulting Group, and was
Managing Director for five years. The next four years were spent as
Development Director of the world's largest publishing company,
IPC. He is now a freelance consultant, on both sides of the Atlantic,
to government and industry.
