Bramshill House
THE HISTORIC CHARACTER of the early 17th century mansion at
Bramshill presented a special problem to the architects
of
the new
buildings required for the Police College:
that
of
linking old and
new whilst ensuring that the old house in its accustomed setting
was not overwhelmed by the comparatively large additions which
had to be made. Some sacrifices were necessary: the pleasant 18th
century barn had to be demolished to make room for the new
dining hall, for instance, but the 18th century stable block has been
retained intact and
part
of
it now houses living accommodation and
a new sick bay. Both the National Trust and the Royal Fine Arts
Commission were consulted during the planning.
