Astrophysicist Prof Geraint Lewis, 51, shocked ET fanatics by saying humans could be the only lifeforms around.

He spoke out ahead of the planned October launch of the £7.5billion James Webb Space Telescope.

The JWST will allow scientists to see distant planets in new detail and analyse their atmospheres for signs of life.

Welsh-born Geraint, who teaches at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy in Australia, warned alien hunters that they may be disappointed.

He said: "Getting the chemistry of an atmosphere doesn't reveal if there's life on a planet but it will give a good idea of

The best data so far - from Nasa's Kepler telescope - led to estimates of 300million habitable planets in our galaxy.
