THE possibilities of wireless as a means of communication
for the police authorities are so varied and extensive
that
perhaps it would be interesting to give a briefdescription of the
most important wireless channels available before considering
the more technical points, such as the comparative merits of
the different methods of communication by wireless, the most
suitable type of apparatus for different conditions, the power
required for various ranges, the wave-lengths, and so on.
Public
Broadcast.-This
is probably one of the best known
services available; it is extremely useful when it is necessary to
know the whereabouts of a person whose address is unknown.
Such police messages can be heard every night in any broadcast
area.Direction-Finding
Service.-
This
service isTparticularly
valuable to the police, as it provides a means of locating illicit
wireless transmitting stations, and so renders
it
impossible
for undesirable persons to communicate with each other, at
least for any length of time.
Fixed and
Mobile
Stations.-The
fixed station is located
at police headquarters and consists of a transmitter and
receiver, while the mobile station consists of a transmitter
and receiver mounted in a police van.
The
usefulness of this channel is immediately obvious.
All police vans fitted with wireless gear can be called into action
within a few minutes of receiving information.
To
make the
advantages clear, one can imagine the following case:
If
anumber of police motor patrols happen to be away
from headquarters in various parts of the city, and some of
