THE
WOLFSON
COURSE
Wolfson College, Cambridge
The Midland Bank, following an approach by Wolfson College
decided in May, 1978 to provide sponsorship to enable Police
Officers to attend the Wolfson Course at Wolfson College,
Cambridge. The Midland Bank's offer was to provide six
studentships, one for each term during two academical years of three
terms each. Consultations were held with representatives of the
Home Office and A.C.P.O. and this resulted in the agreement to
extend the scheme to nine terms with a proportionate financial
contribution from the Police Force to those candidates who were
successful in being selected for the course. The selection procedure
took place during the first half of 1979, initially at local Police level
culminating in interview at the College in
June
where the
selection panel consisted of representatives
ofthe
Midland Bank, the
College and A.C.P.O. I was fortunate enough to be selected for the
Course for the Michaelmas Term, 1979. The other two candidates
selected at that time for the Lent and Easter Terms, 1980 were from
the West Midlands and Devon Forces.

Wolfson, then known as University College. After the benefit of the
experience gained over the ensuing ten years a conference of
representatives from various companies, including both those who
did and did not make use of the Course, was held and it was
unanimously decided that it would be most worthwhile to continue
the Course due to the great value in the personal development of
individuals attending allied with the subsequent benefits to the
employing agency. In 1977, therefore, Wolfson College undertook
the full responsibility for the Course, thereby strengthening its
established role as a vital link between the University on the one hand
and industry, commerce and the public services on the other.
Wolfson College which was officially opened by Her Majesty the
Queen in Jubilee Year, is basically a post-graduate college, founded
following a major benefaction from the Wolfson Foundation. The
College, in keeping with Cambridge tradition, is built on a "court
