After doing this it is possible to release the pilot from the safety
equipment by pulling down on three barrel connections at upper
right thigh, centre of lower body and upper left thigh. This will dis-
engage the connections.
Then to release the parachute harness, press the plate on the white
harness buckle at the middle
of
the body at the same time supporting
the back of the buckle. The straps will disengage. Care should be
taken in performing this movement as the pilot may have internal
injuries. Then
unhook
the oxygen mask on the right side of his helmet
and disconnect the telephone blue lead on the left side of the head-rest.
Next lift the pilot's feet from the rudder bar
and
draw him out.
It
is
quite safe to stand on the wings near the canopy. A word of warning
though, take care not to touch the Drogue
Gun
on the left hand side
of the seat.
It
is painted red
and
marked
DANGER.
The bolt which is
shot from this gun could cause a nasty injury to the receiver.
When not in use on the ground the seat is made safe by placing
the prong in a safety strap fitted over the face screen container
and
it is only removed from this position before flight. The sear at the
top of the rear
part
of
the seat though, is the one you 'would-be
rescuers' must make for, as the other position may not be available.
Do
NOT
TOUCH
ANY
PART
OF
THE
SEAT
WITHOUT
FIRST
PLACING
THE
SAFETY
PRONG
INTO
POSITION
IN
THE
SEAR.
At first this may appear complicated
but
it is really very simple
and
therein lies the danger.
From
a press cutting in a recent newspaper
it is understood
that
American aircraft of the
jet
fighter type will in
future incorporate an ejection capsule.
It
will be of the rocket ejection
type
but
will be a completely sealed
part
of the aircraft which contains
the pilot
and
his instruments which will sail to earth on a parachute
and
if it lands on the sea it will float and be stocked with food, drink,
and
rockets for distress. The motion of the waves will ventilate it
by means of a pump. Who knows what the future may hold in regards
to ejection from aircraft? Until then take care with the present method.
