Bumping and barging between the evens winner, runner-up Bob Olinger and third Langer Dan gave on-course stewards a real headache

To gasps from the crowd, they passed the post in unison, none of the three giving an inch in a fight for £140,325.

Jumps to the right from heavilybacked Impaire Et Passe started a chain of moves from his rivals amassing on either side.

Directly behind at its penultimate flight, Rachael Blackmore switched to the favourite's inner on Bob Olinger.

At the same time, Harry Skelton tried to steer Langer Dan around Impaire Et Passe, who was galloping towards the track's far rail.

As the line drew closer, his challengers were eating away at a small advantage, but the result - after a near half-hour wait - favoured Willie Mullins and Paul Townend.

"He quickened smartly to go and win well and then he's just had a look around in the last 100 yards," said the jockey, on-board I Am Maximus in tomorrow's big race.

"I'd have liked company, but the other jockeys aren't silly, they aren't going to give me help."

Townend and Skelton were cautioned for careless riding.

Bob Olinger, sent to Aintree by Henry de Bromhead, lost out by just a nose, with a short-head back to the third.

"I thought we were unlucky to be fair," the trainer said. "That's the way the stewards looked at it and we just have to accept it.
