Southgate saw his side grab a lastgasp equaliser via Jude Bellingham to avoid successive defeats.

But, on a miserable night in London, it wasn't the damp squib some will claim as Toney scored his first international goal on his first start and was a handful for the Belgium defence.

And the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Jarrod Bowen and Joe Gomez staked their claims to be part of Southgate's squad for the trip to Germany.

Lewis Dunk, however, might want to start browsing holiday brochures following a first-half mistake to forget.

Southgate had to shuffle his pack due to crippling injuries and made five changes to the side who lost to Brazil. The most notable were a first start for Manchester United teen Mainoo while Toney led the attack, winning his cap No.2 exactly one year after his first.

The night started badly for England. John Stones pulled up with a muscle issue inside 10 minutes and limped off, with Joe Gomez replacing him.

And moments later they were behind after a blunder from Jordan Pickford.

His clearance went straight to Amadou Onana, who laid it off to Youri

Tielemans and he threaded it past Pickford as he ran back.

But Belgium's lead lasted just six minutes after Toney charged on to Bellingham's pass and was brought down by Jan Vertonghen. Ref Sebastian Gishamer pointed to the spot...
