As Spurs visit St James' Park, they find themselves in a strong position to clinch a return to Europe's top-tier competition, having edged past Aston Villa into fourth place last weekend. It was a different story last season, with Newcastle finishing 11 points clear of Spurs and able to clinch Champions League qualification

This season, however, they have failed to translate into a period of dominance for Eddie Howe's Saudibacked club. The Magpies, who currently sit in eighth place, have been hampered by a number of injuries, a situation that has seen Postecoglou repeatedly use them as an example of how a top-four finish should not be seen as a guarantee of progression in the long run.
